I Find It Hard To Understand Buffon’s Rant Against Referee – Del Piero
Legendary Juventus striker-turned-pundit Alessandro Del Piero has admitted that he struggles to understand Gianluigi Buffon’s point of view after the veteran goalkeeper launched a scathing attack on match officials following Juventus’ Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid.
The 40-year-old custodian was shown a red card in what many believe will be his final appearance in Europe’s premier club competition after protesting a decision, made by referee Michael Oliver, to award Los Blancos Lucas Vazquez a penalty late into stoppage time.
Following the match, Buffon voiced his displeasure at the official, making reference to the first leg of the tie before suggesting that the referee should have been more sensitive in the context of the match.
However, Del Piero has conceded that he finds it difficult to understand Buffon’s position, and claims his former teammate could regret his choice of words once the dust settles on their defeat.
“When [Buffon] talked about the referee, it was difficult for me to understand him honestly,” Del Piero told Sky Sport Italia.
“I do not understand why he made such a reference to the first leg.
“Football is like that, we analyse the present moment whether it is good or ugly.
“I think that in a few days, Buffon will have different words to say to the referee.”
